Mexican Silver Jewellery

Long before the Spanish occupation of the region known today as Mexico, silver was being mined by the Mayans and made into objects of adornment.

Within a year of the Spanish conquest, the Spaniards were working these mines and the silver was sent back to Spain and the Spanish court.

Especially during the 18th Century the mines were developed, bringing untold wealth to some of the Spanish settlers. Even today some of these same mines are still in operation.

Silver jewellery-making as it is known today was not established until the arrival in Mexico in the 1930s of an American by the name of William Spratling. He was able to teach the local people new, modern designs incorporating the latest processing methods. To encourage the artisans, a silver fair was held once a year with prizes for the finest pieces. Mexican silver jewellery became renowned on the world markets for its excellence of design and workmanship, a position it holds to this day. The silver artisans are constantly striving to create new and innovative designs, keeping up with and ahead of the current trends.

All pieces are made from .925 silver, which means that it has 925 parts in a thousand of pure silver and is stamped accordingly.

NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2010

I was recently in Mexico – as usual I had a great time!

Best of all I found new jewellers, visited my old friends (as so many of the jewellers have become) and bought a wide range of lovely new pieces. Every visit reinforces my belief that the Mexican crafts-people make the finest silver jewellery, world wide – all at realistic prices.

So it is with great pleasure that I have included photos of some of my new purchases.

Of course I cannot include everything, there would not be space! But as the jewellery sells I keep adding new styles.

A new section that I have started is that of men’s jewellery including cuff links, money clips, rings etc and biker jewellery like chain bracelets and a very interesting silver buckle.

Make use of the very successful and simple-to-use order system. Browse through the photos until you find what you are looking for, use the Kwikwap on-line-payment system and within two or three days, you will have the piece of jewellery of your choice.

Just remember to add R60 to the total cost to cover postage and insurance. (all jewellery is sent by the Post Office Speed Service Courier System) All those who have used it can attest to its success in getting your order to you within one or two days.

Please pass on my website details www.senoritasilver.co.za to your friends because they will be envious when your parcel arrives!!
